Sarah Girling

It is with immense sadness that we share the news that Sarah Girling passed away last weekend.

Sarah was a much-loved member of Henley Rowing Club - a lively, supportive and generous presence both on and off the water. She was always a pleasure to row with, always ready with encouragement, and always happy to share her knowledge and passion for the sport with others.

Sarah rowed for more than 30 years. She began her rowing career at Lensbury Club in London before moving to Henley and joining Upper Thames Rowing Club. There, she became a central figure in the dominant lightweight women’s squad of the late 1990s, balancing the demands of intense training, GB squad trials and year-round racing alongside a full-time career and building her first home in Harpsden Road.

Throughout her rowing career, Sarah achieved success at every level of the sport, winning medals across numerous competitions. Yet what stood out most to so many was her kindness, humility and unwavering support for her teammates, even while navigating the same challenges and pressures herself.

At Henley Rowing Club, Sarah enjoyed success at many regattas, including two gold medals at the British Masters Championships and a memorable victory at Henley Masters Regatta - achievements of which she was immensely proud. She deeply valued the community and friendships she found at HRC, and in turn became an important part of the fabric of the club itself.

Her trademark beaming smile, positivity and constant support of others carried both her and her crews through many demanding moments over the years. She will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege to know and row alongside her.

Our thoughts are with her husband Andrew, her son Alex, and all of Sarah’s family and close friends at this incredibly difficult time.

We kindly ask all members to be mindful of the family’s privacy and to allow them the space and time they need to grieve.
