Henley juniors break Fours Head course record

Junior girls

Following the success at recent local regattas, Henley Rowing Club’s Junior girls competed last weekend at the first of this season’s major national events – The Fours Head of River. Nearly 500 crews competed on the 6.8Km Boat Race course from Chiswick to Putney. Conditions were as good as they get on the Tideway and even the heavy morning rain had ceased by the time crews started set off.

WJCoxed Four_HRCThree Junior girls crews competed, but because of the events rules the second coxed four of Rebecca Lister, Alicia Redman, Grace Johnson, Amelia Crick and cox Esther Morgan had to compete at the senior level of IM2. They finished twelfth in this category but their time would have given them third place in the Junior Coxed Fours Event. The Junior event was however won by the first Henley crew of Ella Morgan, Georgia Edwards, Clare Pearson, Issy Jonsson and cox Freya Reid. The girls had an outstanding row and despite some slower crews impeding there progress, they won by 17 secs and set a new course record beating the previous record held by HRC since 2010 by 28 secs. This time also made them the third fastest coxed women’s four overall.

Competing in Junior Quads Mary Wright, Sophia Hahn, Lottie Orr and Georgie Robinson Ranger, also put in a very good performance with some very good sculling throughout the race and resulting in a clear 11secs win against local rivals Marlow Rowing Club. This is the second year running that Henley has won both the Junior events and the third year running the quads event.

Junior boys competed well

The Junior boys quad also competed well coming 15 out of 31 crews. This is a relatively young crew with two J16 boys and two J17s competing in the Junior category of boys up to 18 years.
