Henley Junior boys and girls who previously qualified to represent the Thames Upper Region, competed at Nottingham on 23rd April in the 2017 Junior Inter-regional Regatta.  The team’s efforts contributed to the second place for the Upper Thames Region, with Thames London being the overall event winner.

The medal haul started with the WJ15 coxed four of Jess Roberts, Phoebe Snowden, Georgia Brown, Hanna Hills and cox Freya Reid, claiming gold.

This was followed by the WJ16 quad of  Esther Morgan, Sophia Hahn, Jess Arlett and Emeline Warner, claiming silver in the last 500m.

Next up was the WJ16 coxless four of Amelia Crick, Phoebe Fletcher, Amber Weller and Caoimhe O’Donohue. Due to problems with a blade in the semi, they thought they may not have made the final, but all that was forgotten after 750m when they moved through the pack to claim gold.

The last race was a crew of Jess Roberts, Hanna Hills,Sophia Hahn, Carla Russell, Georgia Brown, Amy Howard, Natalie Cooper, Hazel Drury and cox Ella Nolson. These are all J15’s bar Sophia Hahn and cox Ella Nolson, but were racing in the J16 division. The race was true battle up to 1000m with Henley dead level with a composite crew from Kingston Grammar School and Kingston Rowing Club, after which Henley’s push got their nose in front and they went on to claim gold by 1 length.

Coach Steve Brown said

Every athlete was outstanding today and they all did their club and the region proud.

Junior boys also competed …

Both boys’ squad boats medalled.  In J16 2x, Oliver Taylor and Balthasar Issa won silver in an exceptionally tight race from the off. In a fast time, they lost out by only a second to Lea Rowing Club’s 2x, a crew that won gold at last summer’s British Junior Rowing Championships.

In J15 1x, Grant Taylor showed the wisdom of pressing hard right up to the finish line. He overtook the third placed sculler in the last three strokes to claim bronze in only his second competitive outing in a single scull.

a remarkable achievement by all the boys
